What is Scar Revision surgery ?

Scar revision surgery is a procedure aimed at minimizing the appearance of scars, improving their texture, color, and overall aesthetic quality. While scars are a natural part of the healing process after injury or surgery, they can sometimes be prominent, raised, indented, or otherwise cosmetically displeasing. Scar revision surgery offers various techniques to address these concerns and enhance the appearance of scars, restoring confidence and improving self-esteem.

What applications is this used for?

  • Cosmetic Improvement: Scar revision surgery aims to improve the appearance of scars, making them less noticeable and more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Functional Enhancement: In some cases, scars may cause functional limitations, such as restricted movement or discomfort. Scar revision surgery can address these issues and improve functionality.
  • Psychological Well-being: Prominent or disfiguring scars can impact self-confidence and psychological well-being. Scar revision surgery can help individuals feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance.
  • Scar Contractures: Scars that cause tightness or contracture of the skin, limiting movement or causing pain, may benefit from surgical intervention to release the tension and improve mobility.

The Procedures

Several techniques may be used for scar revision, depending on the type, size, location, and characteristics of the scar. Common scar revision techniques include:

    1. Excision: Surgically removing the scar tissue and closing the wound with sutures. This method is suitable for raised, hypertrophic, or keloid scars and allows for the creation of a finer, less noticeable scar.
    2. Z-plasty: A specialized surgical technique used to reposition and redistribute scar tissue along natural skin lines and creases, minimizing tension and improving the scar’s appearance.
    3. W-plasty: Similar to Z-plasty, W-plasty involves creating multiple triangular or zigzag incisions to break up the linear scar pattern and camouflage the scar within surrounding skin texture.
    4. Dermabrasion: A mechanical or chemical exfoliation technique used to remove the outer layers of skin, smoothing the surface and reducing the appearance of scars, particularly for shallow scars or uneven texture.
    5. Laser Therapy: Using laser energy to target and remodel scar tissue, improving texture, color, and overall appearance. Laser therapy is often used for hypertrophic scars, keloids, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
    6. Steroid Injections: Injecting corticosteroids into hypertrophic or keloid scars to reduce inflammation and minimize scar tissue formation. This method can help flatten and soften raised scars over time.
    7. Scar Revision with Tissue Expansion: A technique used for larger scars or scar contractures, involving the insertion of a tissue expander beneath the skin to stretch healthy adjacent tissue, which is then used to replace scar tissue and reconstruct the area.

What is the recovery time ?

Recovery after scar revision surgery depends on the technique used, the extent of the procedure, and individual patient factors. Patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, bruising, or temporary changes in sensation following surgery, which can be managed with pain medication and proper wound care. It’s essential to follow any postoperative instructions provided by the healthcare provider, including wound care, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments. Sun protection measures, including wearing sunscreen and protective clothing, are essential to prevent scar discoloration and minimize sun exposure during the healing process.

what patients say

He is down to earth...
Mr Jeevan listened to my problem, explained exactly what he could do, explained what complications and possible outcomes could be. I had a much better understanding, at no time did I feel rushed or unimportant. On the day of the procedure, I was confident I would get the best possible care from him. He is down to earth and not at all pompous or uncaring unlike some members of his profession. My outcome was fantastic and I am very thankful I went to see him.

The whole service provided has been second to none. Mr Jeevan put me completely at ease, thoroughly explained my condition and a range of possible treatments. I am very impressed with the speed of the treatment from initial consultation to surgery which only took two weeks. Mr. Jeevan made sure I was very comfortable during and after surgery and cannot speak too highly of him and his team, including the nursing staff. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Jeevan and the hospital in the future.

Perfect end result...
I recently had a breast augmentation with Mr Jeevan and it’s been the best decision I ever made. The end result is perfect and has give me some much needed confidence. Now let’s start with Mr Jeevan himself, he has been amazing throughout my Journey. From start to finish he really couldn’t do enough. From the very first consultation, he advised me on sizing, procedure and give me some much needed reassurance (I was a very nervous and squeamish patient). He has been very professional, approachable and accommodating
